NEW NET PROJECT UNIGIS LATINOAMÉRICA

The SIGTE has promoted a new project, UNIGIS LATINOAMÉRICA: a network of universities and academic institutions which contribute to the promotion and development of the training of GIS professionals in Latin America.

On the 17, 18 and 19 October, a first meeting was held in Girona with universities and institutions from different Latin American countries - Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile and Ecuador- which currently maintain a good position in relation to research, development and formation of GIS.

As a result of this first meeting, common lines for cooperation have been specified within the framework of a UNIGIS network in Latin America, and objectives have been outlined in order to go ahead with this network, as well as setting out the first joint work actions.

The specific aims of the project could be summed up as:

- To promote and develop quality training of professionals in GIS in Latin America, based on the use of ICT and, in particular, e-Learning.
- To develop joint GIS projects based on common lines of work and objectives.
- To promote the exchange of students and lecturers among universities.

At the same time, the first milestones of the project have been established, including a proposal for different workshops to be organized by the different members of the network, the first of which will be organized by UNIGIS Ecuador – the University of San Francisco, Quito- the next 26, 27 and 28 March, 2008 in Quito.
