Provision of Interoperable Datasets to Open GI to the EU Communities – GIS4EU
The main objective of GIS4EU is the
definition, editing and integration of geographic reference data (basic), according to Annexes I and II of the
INSPIRE Directive.
The EU community area continues to experience certain problems related to the integration of geospatial and cartographic data from different member states, which make the access to and exchange of this geographic information difficult.
Within the framework of this European research project, the aim is
to find suitable mechanisms and tools for capturing and editing geographic data which, within this community framework, would permit, for example:
cartographic coordination and integration in cross-border areas, sharing maps via the interoperability, design and implementation of local, regional and sectorial spatial data infrastructures.
GIS4EU is coordinated from Italy by CORILA, the
Consortium for Coordination of Research Activities Concerning the Venice Lagoon System, and
21 members from 10 different countries will be taking part. Standing out among them, apart from the SIGTE, are Intergraph (Germany, Italy and Poland), the Center for Geospatial Science at the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom), the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia (Spain), the Portuguese Geographic Institute (Portugal) and the University of Rome "LA SAPIENZA" (Italy).
The project, started in
November 2007, will last 30 months and is co-financed by the European
eContentplus programme.
